The Memling Hotel has occupied the same location in the heart of the Gombe district since 1937. It was originally built by the former airline Sabena to accommodate passengers in transit between Belgium and Leopoldville, the former name of the capital. Over the decades, this five-star hotel has become one of the most famous and prestigious places to stay in the Congolese capital. In fact, its name has appeared in some of the most defining chapters of Kinshasa’s history.

Located a stone’s throw from the Boulevard du 30 Juin, the Memling combines accommodation, catering, meeting rooms and reception areas all in one place.

The Memling Hotel: over 80 years of history, built stage by stage

The story began in 1937 with Wing A: three floors, 38 rooms, a restaurant and a bar. Wing B followed in 1955, then Wing C in 1963, gradually increasing the hotel’s capacity to more than 200 rooms and apartments.

When the Congo became independent, the Memling became part of the Compagnie des Grands Hôtels Africains, which was to turn the property into its flagship hotel. A major renovation was then carried out between 1985 and 1994. Its interiors were transformed and its capacity refocused to provide 180 rooms, including 19 junior suites and 2 presidential suites. On 24 September 1994, the Memling officially reopened its doors with a five-star rating, which it has proudly retained ever since.

Located in the capital’s diplomatic and financial district, the Memling has become a landmark in Kinshasa’s urban, diplomatic and cultural history. It is a place that has played host to international gatherings and important strategic meetings.
